Wedding Invitation Etiquette

Wedding Invitation Wording Etiquette

Whether you decide to use traditional wedding invitations, online wedding invitations, or handmade and custom wedding invitations, it is important to maintain proper etiquette. Correct wedding invitation wording is possible for even affordable wedding invitations or discount wedding invitations. Simple writing guidelines combined with wedding invitation design will allow for a professional and classy start to your event.

Although proper wedding invitation etiquette may seem daunting, with a few guidelines it is in fact easy to achieve. Some general rules are as follows:

All words should be completely spelled out. -Names: Should be spelled out completely with the exceptions of Doctor (Dr.), Mister (Mr.), and Misses (Mrs.). Middle names should be completely written out or omitted, if possible. Roman numerals should be used instead of “the 2nd” or “the second” (use John Smith II rather than John Smith the second.) -Addresses: The entire address including the house number and words such as Road, Place, Street, and Avenue should be completely written out. Exceptions include Mount (Mt.) and Saint (St.). -Times: 3:30 p.m. should be written as “half past three” or “half after three.” Similarly, 10:00 a.m. should be written as “ten o’clock in the morning” and 8:00 p.m. as “eight o’clock in the evening.” -Dates: The number of the date follows the day of the week. January 5 should be written out as “Sunday, the fifth of January.” 2010 must be written as “two thousand and ten,” although the year can be omitted completely if desired.

Contractions must never be used – words must be written out entirely. Contractions will make your invitations appear rushed and inappropriate.

Wedding invitations should be written in the third person. “We invite you” must instead be written as “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith invite you.”

Common writing rules still apply. Be mindful of your grammar usage and spelling. Capitalization should be at the beginning of every sentence, although some people prefer to capitalize the first letter of every line. United Kingdom English spellings – such as favour and honour – can be used to your liking.

With close attention to detail, your wedding invitations can exude class and elegance for your joyous event. During these tough times, a budget conscious wedding may be necessary. Many companies offer options for discount wedding invitations including online wedding invitations. By following these guidelines and maintaining a simple, classy design, even cheap wedding invitations can exude class and reverence that are suitable for your special day.
